Want to Lose Weight? Don't Fast Print E-mail

FACT OR FICTION? Fasting is a good way to jump-start a weight-loss program.

FICTION: Fasting is not the way to start any weight-loss program, according to the American Dietetic Association. Fasting deprives the body of energy and nutrients needed for normal function. Any rapid weight loss is mostly water and muscle loss. Fasting may also cause fatigue and dizziness.

What's more, there's a misconception that fasting cleans out all the toxins in the body. Actually, when there are no carbohydrates around for energy, body chemicals called ketones build up in the body.  This can be quite toxic and places a large burden on the kidneys.
