Egg-zellent. Print E-mail

Let’s briefly review the favorite standby lines for celebs who have lost a ton of weight in a very short time:

1) “I started doing Pilates twice a week.”

2) “I’ve been eating a lot of lean fish and veggies.”

3) “Whenever I’m hungry, I have a couple of almonds.”

Now I think it’s time to add omelets to this list, because I can’t even count the number of celebs who have invoked the eggy wonderfood in the past few weeks. Mariah eats them. So does Fergie. Cheryl Burke eats ‘em with turkey and mushrooms. Seriously, omelets have been sharing a breakfast table with more stars than Criss Angel.

Still, there’s something to say for the diner staple, although all omelets are not created equal. A ham and cheese omelet at Bob Evans will cost you 761 calories. Make the same meal at home with one egg, a half-ounce of ham, and a half-ounce of cheese, and you’ll reap the same nutritional benefits (protein, calcium, potassium) for under 200 calories. Switch to egg-white omelets and you’ll cut out a good chunk of cholesterol. In fact, you can rethink just about any fast-food omelet and turn it into a healthy breakfast. For example, the Spanish omelet at McD’s is 765 calories; instead, steal a tip from Fergie and add veggies and salsa to a home-cooked omelet. A tablespoon of salsa only contains five calories. Bueno!
