FACT OR FICTION? I can eat as much olive oil as I want since it helps to prevent heart disease.
FICTION: Americans tend to think that more is better. Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat and studies suggest it may play a role in preventing heart disease. However, olive oil can't help if you end up eating a diet that's high in total fat. According to the American Dietetic Association, a low-fat diet, especially one low in saturated fat, is still recommended for a healthier heart. This means consuming no more than 30 percent fat from total calories. In your quest for a healthier eating plan, you can substitute some monounsaturated fats for saturated ones in your food choices.
