Mariah’s Extremely Rational Diet Print E-mail
by Kara Wahlgren

Apparently Mariah Carey has lost 20 pounds, although I’m not entirely sure I buy that. For starters, she’s looked exactly the same—give or take some water weight—since, what, 1996? Also, last year she was on Leno claiming to have lost 32 pounds. So I guess at some point, we all must have missed the era when Mariah Carey weighed 200 pounds. Because she sure has lost a lot of weight for someone who wasn’t overweight before and isn’t stick-thin now.

But let’s ignore the fuzzy math, because Mariah’s account of her weight loss is fantastic. It’s almost like great satire, except she’s serious. Here are my four favorite quotes.

1) “I don’t feel like you have to be a size zero. It does feel good when you get into a nice size three and you’re like ‘It feels big in here.’ We should all embrace who we are physically.”

Okay, so what’s between a size zero and a roomy size three? A size one, I presume. This is a valiant attempt at positive body image, but I see a few key errors. First, there’s a big difference between embracing your body and striving to be a size one. And second, Mariah is five-foot-nine. If she were really a size one, she would be Giselle Bundchen, but skinnier.

2) “I have a wonderful trainer. She lives in St. Bart’s.”

This is not the ideal place for your personal trainer to reside when you live in New York City.

3) “If I want a little snack, I know if [my trainer] Patricia’s in the kitchen, she’s going to give me something really bleak to eat, so I don’t even bother going downstairs. I just send somebody else to get something for me and sneak it up!”

First of all, how many random staffers are wandering around Mariah’s house at any given time? And more importantly, what kind of diet tip is this? If I’m not mistaken, this means she flies her trainer up from the Caribbean to prepare her food, then gets her hired help to fetch forbidden junk food instead.

4) “I’m not eating ice cream or fattening stuff. I like flavor in my life. I don’t just want chicken stock and zucchini and carrots and call it a day. Patricia will also give me fish and chicken.”

Chicken stock? What awful past diet must she be referring to?

Anyway, if your brain hasn’t self-destructed after reading this, and you’re still interested in Mariah’s weight loss secret, here it is: She does Pilates to tone her muscles, and she eats a protein-rich diet with lots of fish, eggs, and veggies. Surprise, surprise.

Thanks, Kara!

Your wisdom & comments are valued & appreciated.

It's time more of your kind of "get real" perspective became more readily read & understood & applied.

When the general consensus can relect more of your common sense, we can look to a healthier group of US adults & children, as well as a better health worldwide.

In the face of the pandemic of obesity & related diabetes in adults & children, not to mention "dysmorphic" diesase,
we've got some major work ahead of us.

You make my life's work much easier, Kara. Thank you for that. All commentaries,
articles, and anything you write on this site & elsewhere will shared with my over 10,000 clients served in over 26 years.

Your commentary is a great step for a more rational thinking and undertanding without unrealistic expectations. Our celebrities
who choose total honesty without embellishment, "stretching the truth"
will do much more to help all of our culture, young & old, benefit in
good health. Exemplary behavior should be embraced by our "celebrites" for greater good for all who value their perspectives.

The image Dove is encouraging as one embracing their individuality of
real people is helpful. All sizes, shapes in optimal health is what you,
Kara, embody in what you're saying
here -- kudos! Your commentary will
be shared in my newsletter for clientele, as a "wake up call to get real!"

Now it will be a follow search for any good read you offer, as this one.
Looking forward to reading more of what you've got to say ... in any
forum, offering my a*sistance to you to benefit others' health, and
to be reciprocally of benefit to you & those you reach, as one who
appreciates you, I am

Respectfully,

* Zna *
