I swear there’s some sort of celebrity competition to see who can make exercise sound the easiest. I mean, just this week Hilary Swank credited Power Pilates and good genes for her perfect figure, even though everybody and their mother knows exactly how hard Hilary works to stay in shape. She practically won an Oscar for weight lifting. (And acting, too, of course. But you can’t tell me she would’ve won without those biceps!) Now Mario Lopez is claiming that you can lose weight in a few easy steps. Well, two thousand steps, to be exact. In a video diary for People.com, he says, “If you do 2,000 steps a day you’ll burn more calories.” He recommends a basic salsa step for fulfilling those numbers. Of course, at the end of the video, he casually mentions that he also does weight training, boxing, running, and cycling. Ahem. If you’re strapping on your pedometer right now, keep in mind that those two thousand steps are in addition to the ten thousand you’re already supposed to be getting as a daily average. It’s an important detail, because most Americans don’t come anywhere near the RDA in the first place. And doctors generally recommend 12,000 to 15,000 for weight loss. A mile of walking generally takes about 2,000 steps, although it could take 2,500 if you have a shorter stride. And Mario is on to something (um, besides Karina Smirnoff) with his salsa moves—20 minutes of dancing is equivalent to about 4,000 steps. Trackback(0)
