FitTip: Making the Most of Your Multivitamin Avoid cheating your body of its essential vitamins and minerals. Pair your pills with food.

If you're swallowing your multivitamins on an empty stomach, you're cheating yourself of essential vitamins and minerals, say nutritionists. Multivitamins are comprised of two types of vitamins, both of which need to be taken with food to deliver their benefits. Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, dissolve in the water that's created as food is digested. Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin E, need to attach themselves to fat molecules in order to pass through your system.

While taking your supplements with food will give you the greatest benefit, don't skip them altogether if you don't have the time to grab at least a light snack before popping your pill. Experts believe that although it may not pack quite the punch, it's better than not taking vitamins at all.
