Nobody’s Anorexic. Got It? Print E-mail

Why is everybody suddenly hellbent on dispelling anorexia rumors? Just this week, four of the skinniest tabloid staples have gone to great lengths to promise they’re eating like pigs. (And, you know, their stressful lifestyle just won’t let them gain an ounce!)

First, Kate Bosworth and Keira Knightley both talked to USA Today about their weight. Kate blamed her weight loss last year on post-breakup stress. “I was grieving quite a few things…and it happened to show physically as well,” she said. She says she’s healed now—except that she doesn’t exactly look like she’s been packing on the pounds. And during the interview, she drank tea and “nibbled on a berry.” Wow, a berry? Must have been her cheat day.

Keira, on the other hand, had no healing to do, because she’s always been healthy. She said, “I'm very glad I'm not anorexic, or I wouldn't have been able to climb mountains. A friend and I went to Bhutan . We had a lot of this red rice. I love learning about food. It was amazing." Okay, so she lost me somewhere in Bhutan , but I think this was the gist: If she were anorexic, she wouldn’t have had the strength to climb mountains in Bhutan , where she also ate a lot of carbs. (She also swears she’s “twice the size” of other actresses. Huh?! Elle Fanning, maybe, but that’s about it.) I still think Keira genuinely falls into that five percent of naturally skinny people—but if she feels the need to keep denying it, she should try using linear thought.

So, then it was Angelina’s turn. In her case, saving the world keeps her slim. She said, “Of course I have lost weight. Some days are exhausting, only I’m not able to collapse. I believe in pushing myself to the limits.” On one hand, I believe this. She’s filming an action movie and spending her free time in refugee camps—I don’t think she has much time for square meals. But there are rumors that her tireless drive may come from an addiction to diet pills. Hopefully not true.

And most recently, Amy Winehouse is rumored to have put on fourteen pounds by gorging on fast food. She’s eaten a ton of takeout this week, including seven meals at McDonald’s. Even her worried dad says she looks “stunning.” Although if she’s really gained 14 pounds in a week, she might want to slow it down a little—or at least buy stock in McD’s—because that would require her to eat 7,000 extra calories per day. I’m not saying I couldn’t do it; I’m just saying it may not be the healthiest way to put on much-needed weight. But if she’s making an effort, why knock it? Maybe once she hits a healthy weight, she’ll back off the deep-friend sustenance a little.

Re: Amy Winehouse, yeah, except, have you seen SuperSize Me? McDonalds food is supposedly a hard habit to kick. She'll have to go back to rehab (no no no).

I guess the main problem I have with all of this is the negative stereotype/view of anorexia. Some of the sweetest, most amazing girls deal with it, and they are often some of the most driven and strong individiuals. Instead of focusing on who "is and isn't," maybe we should work on helping those with the disease reversing the trend of increasing rates of eating disorders.
