Cheryl Burke’s Diet of Champions Print E-mail

Now that the lineup of celebs for the fifth season of Dancing With the Stars has been announced, I’m sure everyone’s been racing to get into leotard shape. (Especially since the show broadcasts in HD!) That explains why Melanie Brown’s been looking so fab lately—shockingly, those tabloid reports that Posh had forced her fellow Spice Girls to get skinny were false. I’m rooting for Mel B this season, by the way; she’s got the dance background and DWS vet Maksim as her partner. But to get the edge, she might also want to steal these diet tips from two-time champ Cheryl Burke.

Cheryl—who led Drew Lachey and Emmitt Smith to victory—recently revealed her pre-dance diet. In the DWS spirit, here’s how she rates.

BREAKFAST: “I have a small nonfat double-shot latte with a little Sweet'N Low. If I'm on the run, I grab a low-fat muffin, full of wheat and raisins.”

SCORE: 6. Carb and caffeine overload. Her lazy-morning breakfast of egg-white omelets with turkey and mushrooms is a much better choice. Set the alarm a little earlier, girl! Competition is stiff this season.

LUNCH: “I make a salad with tuna, cucumbers, tomatoes and balsamic vinaigrette. I don't really like mayo, so I stick with dry tuna.”

SCORE: 10!

SNACK: “More tuna or almonds—once in a while, I'll splurge on a Diet Coke.”

SCORE: 8. Almonds are good; Diet Coke is neither a snack nor a splurge.

DINNER: “I stick to the fish dishes like salmon with vegetables, and I try to leave three hours to digest my dinner before bed.”

SCORE: 10. (Great dinner. But calories are calories—eat ‘em whenever.)

Average score: 8.5

Not bad, but she might want to bring those numbers up a little before the season starts. After all, Wayne Newton is her dance partner this season—she’ll need all the help she can get. (Watch him prove me wrong, but I totally predicted Anton’s win last season!)
