The Elephant in the Room Print E-mail

I don’t think many celebs have taken as much crap for their weight as Kelly Clarkson has lately. She’s been a source of tabloid scrutiny and the butt of bloggers’ jokes (not mine—I swear, that headline is not a fat joke). It was even rumored that VitaminWater dropped her contract because she didn’t look healthy enough (not true, but the point is, the rumor was out there). So when I saw her on the cover of this month’s Self, I figured we’d finally get her reaction to the crazy backlash.

Instead: Big fat nothing. She talks about her talents at Scrabble, her breakup-inspired lyrics, and her tendency to cry onstage. But regarding her weight, nada. In fact, the closest she comes to mentioning food is her denunciation of “chi-chi-fa-fa” restaurants. While Self does have a monthly “Happiness” section—which this interview fits into—its celebrity features are usually centered around diet and fitness habits. So in light of all the annoying uproar about Kelly’s size, I was surprised the topic never came up. Wonder if she put the kibosh on any weight talk?

Of course, it is the proverbial elephant in the room, so she hasn’t been able to ignore it completely. Of the criticism, she recently told EW: “You’re just like, ‘Oh, well, that sucks.’ But at the end of the day, it doesn’t suck that much or else I’d do something about it. I work out when I want to work out; I don’t work out when I don’t want to work out.” So obviously the topic isn't completely taboo; makes me wonder if she’s just plain tired of hearing about it.
