What’s With The Idol Weight Obsession? Print E-mail

First there was the hoo-ha about Jordin Sparks’ alleged “obesity.” Then Kelly Clarkson shocked fans by confessing her battle with bulimia. (Okay, so she may have shocked four or five people, tops; the rest of us already knew she had taken her starving-artist days a little too literally, since she’s never exactly been hush-hush about it.) And now, another AI alum has signed on to be the spokesperson for Jenny Craig.

Kimberly Locke has signed as the new face of Jenny Craig after losing 30 pounds on the diet plan. Makes sense, since she’s made her weight struggles as public as humanly possible thus far: She announced her New Year’s resolution to lose 40 pounds on Extra, signed on for a season of Celebrity Fit Club (on which she was infamously threatened by Screech), sang on a cruise ship in her underwear—don’t ask me why—and now she’ll be hawking the diet that helped her shed the weight.

First, I have to give her props for striking while the iron is hot. Second, I think she strikes the right balance between having a positive body image and realizing the need to make healthy changes. Awhile back, she told an interviewer, “I try to tell women all the time, it doesn’t matter what size you are. Love yourself, like who you are, and then if one day you decide you want to lose the weight, then lose the weight.” Seems like she’s decided to respect her body by making better food choices. The diet is more of a lifestyle plan—members learn what foods should be eaten in moderation and which foods are a-ok for gorging, so they can eventually ditch the membership fee and (theoretically) keep the weight off on their own.

As far as Kimberly’s experience on the diet, I’ll assume there’s also a personal chef involved, or at least some frozen freebies. But it’s a far more realistic plan than most other celebs choose, so I’m anxious to see her results. I’m sure the ads will be playing in nonstop rotation any day now.
