Calorie Bargain: Skinny Cow Mint with Fudge Cone Print E-mail
by Charles Stuart Platkin
Thursday, 28 June 2007

The Why:  When my four year old discovered that we had an extra box of these in the freezer she went berserk, and so did my wife, and everyone on the DietDetective.com staff.  Only 150 calories and 3 grams of fat, the refreshingly cool low fat mint ice cream topped with decadent fudge on a crisp chocolate-coated waffle cone makes of a nice summertime treat. And the mint is very refreshing.

The Health Bonus: Three grams of fiber—nice!  A touch of Vitamin A, and 8 percent of your daily calcium requirements.

What We Liked Best: The chocolaty part at the top.

What We Liked Least:  Only four per box, and the high fructose corn syrup that makes up the chocolaty top (which we like sooo much).

What It Replaces: Baskin and Robbins Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream at 270 calories per half cup.

The Price: Box of 4, $4.99

Offerings: Also available are the Vanilla Caramel and Chocolate Fudge Low Fat Ice Cream Cones.

Itis agreed with jo1321 about ice cream with all those ingredients one cannot find on the grocery shelves or know how to pronounce them correctly or know what the meaning of them are. Bought Full Circle Ice Cream had only five ingredients that most would find on their weekly grocery lists. Absolutly delicious. Portion control is another matter. But sitll much better for anyone in an opinion.

After reading several health websites, including this one, I have noticed that almost all of the websites are pushing the skinny cow products for a substitute for icecream novelties. however, if you look closely to the nutritional information about these skinny cow items, not only do they contain high fructose corn syrup like you mentioned above, but they also contain partially hydrogenated oils which we all know are one of the worst ingredients that we can put into our bodies...so my question is, wouldnt you rather eat something more natural with natural ingredients that may happen to contain a little more fat and calories (take Breyers for example which is made with all natural ingredients instead of tons of preservatives) and eat a smaller amount than to poison your body with partially hydrogenated oils and preservatives just to save a few calories?
