Not to run this Jordin Sparks controversy in the ground, but I just heard that Meme Roth, the woman who called Jordin obese, has been receiving death threats from outraged Idol fans ever since she made the inflammatory remarks. Click through to watch the video. Here's the report on fans' reactions to Meme's not-so-kind words. The piece also discusses previous Idol contestants who have gone on to lose a ton of weight after media criticism -- namely Carrie, Jennifer, Diana, and Taylor -- none of whom ever struck me as being at a problematic weight. (Jennifer tipped the scales for Dreamgirls, but that was required for the role, so I'm not counting it. You gotta gain to win the Oscar, girl! Just ask Charlize. And Clooney.) I'm just still wondering how Jordin, of all people, became the poster child for obesity. For starters, she looks normal. Not exactly thin, but not terribly heavy. But just for the sake of argument, let's crunch some numbers. Jordin is six feet tall, so to be considered obese by the CDC's standards, she would have to weight 220 pounds. That would give her a similar body type to Brett Favre, at 6'2" and 222 pounds. Do you see the similarity? No? Me either. But moreover, I just doubt anyone watches American Idol for fitness inspiration. Honestly, if the show had that much impact on impressionable teens, we'd be seeing a lot more Sanjaya-inspired fauxhawks. Although that might not be so bad. Trackback(0)
