Calorie Bargain: Spud Fudge Print E-mail

The Why: We always love a win-win. And we've found one in this cool fudge, which we learned about from The Daily Candy. Believe it or not, it's made with real Idaho potatoes.  (Nope, that's not a typo - you read it correctly: potatoes.) Honestly, it's been a while since a lot of our tasters have eaten fudge, since too much of it can leave you feeling like, well...a sack of potatotes.  But this was a fun and tasty reason to fudge that rule a little!

The Health Bonus: The use of potatoes cuts the sugar in the fudge by about a third.

What We Liked Best: The presentation - these things are cute.  Each piece is shaped like a baked potato, complete with "butter" and "sour cream" toppings made out of white chocolate.

What We Liked Least:  Since this product is made by hand, quantities can be limited.  You may have to wait a while to receive your order.  Also, potatoes notwithstanding, this stuff's still fudge - so don't go overboard.

The Price: $2.25 per 1.5 oz spud; $19.95 per tub of Spuds.

Offerings: Spuds, Truffles

Website: www.spudfudge.com

Where to Buy: Direct from the source, on their site.

Ingredients: Sugar, potatoes, evaporated milk, corn syrup, potassium sorbate, palm kernel oil, partially hydrogenated palm oil, whey, nonfat milk, cocoa, sorbitan monostearate, soya lecithin (an emulsifier), vanilla, yellow #5.

Hey, for anyone whose reading--I know it's not the healthiest treat but I picked these up in a store, and was surprised that the texture is great. Usually any thing but original fudge doesn't have that great firm and chewy texture I remember from when I was a kid. And the thing I like best is that the little potatoes are individually wrapped, which helps me stop at one...(rather than fudge by the pound). Thanx! :0)

I would think a calorie bargain would not just be an alternative, but a healthy alternative. THANK YOU for sharing about this product, but there are plenty of great fudge products that are MUCH healthier options. Have you tried the Dixie Diner brand of ready-to-eat fudge? Here's my review of this fantastic product:

Now THERE is a REAL calorie and carb bargain for you. :)

Jimmy, I guess people missed the point. If you are going to eat fudge ANYWAY, this would be a better choice. Not that this is a healthy alternative--or that you should even eat this. Maybe this was a mistake to choose as a Calorie Bargain. It probably confused people. My mistake.

Charles, you have GOT to be kidding me! So what that they removed 1/3 of the sugar. This Spud Fudge replaces that sugar with potatoes which turns into sugar once it is consumed. Gimme a break! BOO, this is NOT a healthy alternative. How about a sugar-FREE fudge that tastes good?
