FitTip: How to Get the Goodness From Garlic Chop it up for the whole benefit.

You know it's good to toss in lots of garlic while you cook because it not only adds flavor to your food but also helps fight certain cancers.

But did you know you need to prepare the garlic a certain way to get the health benefits out of this herb? A recent study by Kun Song, a doctoral candidate at Penn State University, shows that cooking the garlic cloves whole may not provide the protective benefit you're looking for.

Instead, research suggests it's best to cut, chop or crush the clove and then let it stand for 10 minutes before tossing it into the saucepan. Cutting into the cell membrane releases the enzyme that contains the active compounds, according to Song.
