Teamwork! Print E-mail

I’ve been noticing a trend with celebs teaming up to lose weight. (And I don’t mean that in a “bathroom breaks at Hyde” kind of way, either.)

First there were Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz, who supposedly made a post-breakup pact to get into man-hunting shape. Not so sure if the newfound singledom really had anything to do with it, but apparently Cam ’s been taking her half of the pact very seriously. If I’m counting right, she’s been on about 1,372 surfing trips (give or take) since she split with Justin—although that may have more to do with her hot surf buddy Kelly Slater than with burning calories.

Now I’ve read that Timbaland has a similar thing going with LL Cool J. After gaining weight from a combo of Southern-fried binge eating and skipping meals altogether, he was diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. He vowed to get in shape and struck up a friendly competition with rap’s Adonis. “LL Cool J is an inspiration," Timbaland told Men’s Health recently. “I told him that the next time I saw him, I would be right there with him.” He ate a lot of protein and fresh veggies and did strength training at the gym, alternating between heavy weights and high reps. He ultimately lost 121 pounds, which explains why I spent the majority of the time at his show last month thinking, “Wait, where’s Timbaland?”

Oh, and yes, he works out to his own music.

Anyway, the whole gym-buddy movement makes sense. Having a workout partner pressures you to push harder, because you don’t want to be the loser who’s skipping gym dates or casually strolling on the treadmill while watching close-captioned CNN. If you can’t find a worthy gym buddy, just pick someone at the gym with a kickin’ body and vow to outdo them. They don’t even have to know about the challenge. Just ask Timbaland.
