Eating Right on the Road Overcome vacation temptation with these waistline-friendly tips.

The season of road trips, vacations and jaunts to the beach is upon us. If you're watching your waistline, however, these great summer escapes can become a feeding frenzy if you're not careful. Before you blow your diet, here are some tips to help you overcome vacation temptation.

Arm yourself: Instead of leaving your fate up to the highway mini-mart, bring good-for-you snacks, such as low-fat granola bars, peanut butter on whole grain bread, fresh fruit, pretzels, whole-wheat crackers or dry roasted nuts. If you'll be traveling by air, ask about ordering special meals, such as vegetarian or low-fat entrees.

Hydrate: Whether by plane, train or automobile, traveling is a dehydrating experience. Bring a couple water bottles and fill them as frequently as possible. Keep in mind that by the time you feel thirsty, you're already a bit dehydrated. Plus, often times we can mistake thirst for hunger-another stumbling block when you're trying to eat right on the road. Plan on drinking about one cup of fluid, preferably water or a decaffeinated drink, about every 45 to 60 minutes of travel.

Get moving: Don't just lie in the sun, do something. Go swimming, take a long walk or jog on the beach, play volleyball or go for a bike ride. The more you move, the more calories you burn and the less opportunity you have for mindless snacking.

Be smart: Don't skip meals in an attempt to save calories. This will only backfire and cause you to overeat at your next meal. When you're ravenously hungry that double cheeseburger, jumbo fries and extra large malted always seems justifiable. While we're on the topic of smart food choices, opt for smaller portions to help keep your calories in check and order lower fat fare, such as grilled chicken or fish or tomato-based pasta dishes.

Don't go overboard: Of course vacations are time for relaxing and indulging, but too many ice cream cones and boardwalk funnel cakes can make a serious dent in your weight-loss efforts. While a few high calorie meals won't hurt, try not to indulge every night. If you do, balance out a decadent choice with a lighter one at your next meal.
