Unfortunately, a visit to your local Starbucks could really pack on the pounds...
While it is true that coffee itself is calorie free, recent additions
to the menu at Starbucks and other coffee shops have turned a
low-calorie beverage into a high-calorie dessert! The good news is that
there are ways to warm up with one of these drinks without consuming an
entire meal's worth of calories...check out the tips below for when
coffee comes a cravin'!
SIZE MATTERS
Tall, Grande,
Venti...huh? While it is easy to confuse the words, don't confuse what
they mean. These sizes refer to a 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. cup
respectively. While it may not seem like much, downsizing from a Venti
to a Grande can save 89 calories and 4 grams of fat when talking about
a Mocha Latte.
Feeling brave? Decreasing even further to a Tall
will get rid of another 79 calories and 3 grams of fat, not to mention
a few bucks. Aren't your hips worth a few sips?
SKIM OFF CALORIES
Any drink with milk can be made "non-fat" -- so don't hesitate to ask
for it. By doing so, you can save a huge amount of calories and
fat...in the case of a Starbucks drink, up to 110 calories and 13 grams
of fat!
One 16 oz. Caffe Latte with whole milk: 270 calories, 14 g fat (9 g saturated fat)
One 16 oz. Caffe Latte with skim milk: 160 calories, 1 g fat (1 g saturated fat)
SKIP THE WHIP
Adding whipped cream to the top of your drink packs on an extra 100
calories, and as much as a quarter of a day's worth of saturated fat.
Your server will probably add it unless you request to have it left
off. So go ahead and ask! Once you see how delicious the drink can be
without it, you'll wonder why they bother.
PARTNERS IN CRIME
While
it might sound harmless to enjoy a slice of cake or other display case
selection with your coffee, keep in mind that one Krispy Kreme donut
contains 220 calories and 13 grams of fat!
Cookies? Not much
better. One oatmeal raisin cookie packs close to 200 calories and 7
grams of fat. If you must pair a sweet treat with your coffee (which is
probably sweet enough), go for the rice krispie treat (containing a
mere 90 calories and 2 grams of fat for a 1 oz. square)!
