Hypo-excusism. Print E-mail

Well, Nicole Richie sure knows how to keep herself in the news, doesn’t she? I’m so over her, but I can’t resist commenting on her latest bombshell—that she’s (gasp!) hypoglycemic.

“Four or five times she’s felt really faint and almost passed out,” a source explains. That, of course, is the reason she’s been collapsing all over the place. I know, I know, you thought it was because of dehydration. Maybe because that was the excuse she offered last week. But at last, she’s decided to come forward with her struggle against low blood sugar. Sorry if I sound insensitive, but I’ve been “diagnosed with hypoglycemia” too. (FYI—and pay attention, Nic, in case someone asks—it’s not so much something you have as something you’re prone to.) So I understand what she’s going through, because I’ve dealt with the dizzy spells and lightheadedness. Actually, you know when that happens? When I don’t eat.

As the tabs are explaining it, Nicole’s blood sugar supply is “too low to provide an adequate amount of energy for her body.” Now, I’m not sure if that’s supposed to explain why she keeps fainting or why she’s so skinny in the first place. Seems like they’re trying to cover both in one shot. But the thing is, hypoglycemia (on its own, not as a symptom of diabetes) can be managed pretty easily by, um, eating. More than once a day. And a double-shot skim latte doesn’t count. Seriously—try a calorie or two, and you might find they’re a stellar source of energy.
