Calorie Burning "Bull" Continues Print E-mail

So Enviga (the new energy drink by Coca-Cola and Nestle—both such fine healthy living companies—even though Nestle does own Jenny Craig) came out with a statement standing by their claims that the drink burns calories. Check out USA Today.  The truth is I hate even writing about the product because it probably helps them sell more drinks—in fact—I’m sure their marketing people anticipated and hoped for this type of controversy. But it’s still important for the readers of this site to know—this will not help you lose weight, it’s not what you’re thinking.

The drink makers have come out and said that specifically it is NOT positioning the drink as a weight-loss product. They say it’s for those that are already “thin.”  Come on, spare us. I just think this and that new obesity drug are just signs of the time. The FDA helping pharmaceutical and food companies to deceive the general public—we have this belief (or some of us do) that the Food and Drug Administration will help protect us—it’s just not the case. While they do provide a decent level of protection, you still have to have your guard up.

So what’s the real truth? Any effects that might occur are related to the mild boost you get from caffeine – which is minimal. According to USA Today, any calories burned are from the caffeine that’s in the drink, about 100 milligrams per can, more than coffee and drinking two regular sodas. But if caffeine really helped us burn calories, we would be a nation of thin people. Read more about caffeine.  Oh, and didn’t Coca Cola once make a medicinal claim for it’s product when it first came out back in the 1800s – it was supposed to be a panacea.  I guess there back to their old tricks.
