New Reasons to Ask ‘Got Milk?’

You know the drill: If you consume calcium, you'll help bolster your bones. But research shows there's much more to calcium than just staving off osteoporosis. The mineral may help lower blood pressure and prevent hypertension, and studies suggest that the mineral may cut colon cancer risk by neutralizing acids in your bowels and flushing carcinogens out of your system. To make sure you're getting enough of this all-star mineral (at least 1,000 mg a day, 1,200 mg if you're pregnant), be sure to consume calcium-rich foods such as low-fat or nonfat milk, yogurt, cheese, fortified orange juice and dark leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach.
