Q: I read that ketchup is better for you than fresh tomatoes and helps fight cancer - is this really true?

A: Ketchup, along with other tomato products, contain a substance known as lycopene, which has been shown to reduce the risk of some cancers and cardiovascular disease.

While fresh tomatoes do contain lycopene, you may be surprised to hear that processed tomato products actually do contain larger amounts. Fresh tomatoes, however, also offer a host of other nutrients and therefore are still a great addition to your diet. Tomatoes are a rich source of vitamin A, vitamin C, folate and potassium.

To take advantage of this potent cancer-fighter, stock up on tomato products, many of which are easy options for a quick dinner. Diced or stewed tomatoes are great over pasta or mixed with rice and beans. Tomato soup (reduced-sodium version) is perfect with a sandwich, or as a base for a hearty soup. Salsa is nearly calorie-free and is a great topping for tacos, salads or as a dip for baked chips or veggies. Ketchup, while containing a few more calories, is still a preferred choice over high fat condiments such as mayonnaise or sour cream.
