Q: I love cheese, but I am trying to lose weight...can I still have it?

A: Cheese is a good source of calcium (on average, 1 ounce provides over 10% of most adult's daily calcium needs), but it can quickly nibble away at your allotted daily fat, particularly saturated fat grams.

If you are in love with cheese, however, you're in luck.

There are a few cheeses such as feta, soft goat cheese, some brands of farmer cheese, low-fat cottage and ricotta cheese, as well as part-skim mozzarella that are low in fat. There are also a whole slew of reduced-fat and light cheeses adorning supermarket shelves. The American Heart Association recommends choosing cheeses that have no more than three grams of fat and two grams of saturated fat per ounce.

To get the biggest bang for your buck, go for cheese that packs big flavor. With many cheeses, a little goes a long way. Fresh Romano or Parmesan cheese adds flavor to salads and pasta for only about 25 to 30 calories and 1.5 to 2 grams of fat per tablespoon. Fresh goat cheese can have from four to six grams of fat per serving and makes a creamy addition to pizza and sandwiches. A serving of tangy feta cheese has about six grams of fat (four grams of saturated fat) and is a great addition to an omelet or salad. Read the nutrition label for specific nutrient information.
