McDonalds as a Health Pusher--Are They Scared of Being Sued? Print E-mail

Ok, so on Christmas day I was a bit overzealous with the Are We Slowly Poisoning Ourselves?  I got emails and calls. Friends, family, etc saw my first blog—and had the following comments: “Are you nuts.”  It’s Christmas day. Sorry. Moving on. I saw this ad in Real Simple magazine. I’ll tell you I have mixed emotions. What is McDonalds up to? Is this even healthy?

The ad looks like it is promoting healthy eating, and it is to a certain extent. I guess pushing the Chicken McNuggets (4 piece), which is 170 calories, the Apple Dippers with Low Fat Caramel Dip another 100 calories and the low fat milk is better than the alternatives.  And for parents the Asian Salad with Grilled Chicken is a good choice at 290 calories. The bottom line is that this is a step in the right direction, even though I believe this entire campaign has been motivated by McDonald’s fear of litigation from childhood obesity law suits. It somewhat mirrors the kind of restitution that is already being done by tobacco companies—with one big difference. The tobacco companies are required to do it—McDonalds is doing this type of public health advocacy on their own.   So, even though the motive is not altruistic--it's still good--right? What do you think?
