So you want to be a black belt? These five essentials will help you choose the best school for you.
The martial arts are not just for self-defense. They can work your
heart, your body and your mind. But before you can start throwing kicks
and flipping attackers, you need to find the right school for you. Here
are five essential criteria.
Close proximity.
Let's face it: If it's not close to you, you're not going to go. It
doesn't matter that the ultimate grandmaster is only an hour away if
you can't psyche yourself up for the drive. A school that's less than
15 minutes away is ideal.
Flexible schedules.
Look for schools that have several training sessions during the week. A
school with a flexible and generous class schedule also demonstrates
that it's well-established and well-run.
Pay a visit.
Pick four or five schools and call about visiting as a guest. Any
decent school will be more than happy to let you watch a class and
possibly even take a free tryout class. When you visit for the first
time, be sure to ask lots of questions. You should generally get
friendly and informed responses from those already training. If you
find that anyone is hostile or somehow secretive, it's probably not a
good school. Most credible schools are affiliated with larger
organizations that monitor the quality of their instructors.
Does it feel right?
Each school will have its own unique personality based on the arts
taught, the teachers and the students. Some schools are more
aggressive; others have a more relaxed atmosphere. Pick the one that
feels best to you.
Mind your money.
Generally, a martial arts school will have a monthly fee for
members, ranging from $50 to $120, which the students pay up front.
Beware of schools that try to sway you into lengthy contracts or
require new students to pay for several months in advance. Some schools
offer special prices on the training uniform, known as a gi. If not,
someone should be able to direct you to a good martial arts supply
store in your area.
