The Exercise Class Intimidation Factor Use these confidence-boosting tips to help make you feel at home in class.

If you're thinking about trying a new exercise class, don't let intimidation take over. The students you see dancing and sweating inside the room are able to follow the routine because of practice and determination. Everyone in that exercise class has been in your shoes, nervous, out of shape and dying to walk in.

I would like to help you tame your anxiety and give to you a few special tips that might boost your confidence level. Just keep in mind that we all started somewhere and joining a class is a positive and wonderful feeling. So, let's get ready!

Observation
1. Observe the class before entering, and find out if it is the right level for you. (Watch a class in progress.)
2. Introduce yourself to a few students after the class ends, and ask questions concerning the class. For example: Is it hard to follow? Is the teacher nice? What do I wear? What kind of shape should I be in?
3. Introduce yourself to the instructor and tell her a little about yourself, your health history, and physical fitness level. This may give you an indication if the class and teacher are right for you.

Participation
1. When you enter for the first time, introduce yourself to a few students around you.
2. Ask if the spot you would like to stand in has been taken.
3. Greet the instructor and let her know you are new to her class. Do this so that she can give you a couple of tips about her teaching style and/or give you extra guidance as you follow along.
4. Put all of your belongings in a locker. Bringing them to the exercise studio can be a hazard to others.
5. Bring a water bottle. It is better to be hydrated than dehydrated.
6. Bring a towel to tame your sweat.
7. If you have to leave early, tell the teacher and allow enough time for a safe cooldown (5 to 10 minutes).
8. Try not to be late.
