FitTip: Don't Exercise Until You're Speechless Print E-mail

Why huffing and puffing may hurt, not help.

Breathing hard isn't always the best indication that you're getting a good workout-in fact, it could be a sign that you're pushing yourself too hard. If you can't carry on a simple conversation because you feel like you're on the verge of hyperventilating, it's likely you're working above your target heart rate. Remember: You should always be able to squeeze out a sentence or two while exercising, so if you can't hold up your end of a discussion while working out, turn it down a notch by slowing your pace or intensity.
