Shaking it up can lead to better fitness.

If you've stuck with a workout plan for more than eight weeks, you should be very proud of yourself for your staying power. However, don't let that lull you into the comfort zone. If you've been doing the same exercise routine for several months, it's time to up the ante. Otherwise you run the risk of reaching a fitness plateau.

To get to the next level, gradually increase the duration (say, from 20-minute to 30-minute runs) or the intensity (from five-pound to eight-pound dumbbells) of the exercise-but not necessarily both at once.

Or surprise both your mind and your muscles with a totally different activity that will challenge you in new ways. Take up a team sport, learn a martial art or try a dance class not only to enhance your strength and cardiovascular fitness but also to improve your balance, coordination and flexibility.
