FitTip: Waiting to Stretch Can Be Beneficial Print E-mail

Do you make a bee-line for the mats right after a tough workout? You may want to consider taking a detour by the water fountain

It's essential to cool down right after you work out. However, rather than stretching immediately after exercising, waiting 10 to 15 minutes can be beneficial. If you usually stretch your muscles right after physical activity, you probably feel limber and flexible. That's because your blood circulation has increased due to your workout, making your muscles more pliable. If you wait a few minutes before you stretch, your muscles will lose some of that elasticity, making stretching more difficult, but ultimately offering extended benefits including increased range of motion and improved overall flexibility.
