Ever wonder why people chant? Ever wonder why people chant "om" when they meditate? Couldn't they just as easily say "coffee"or "TV"? Not necessarily. Ancient yogic scriptures advocate the use of a mantra, a meaningful symbol encased in a sound structure and repeated, either silently or aloud, to focus one's mind during meditation. Buddhists believe that "om"-considered the highest, most abstract mantra in ancient Eastern religion - is the sound by which the universe was created and that it represents all the sounds, vibrations and mantras of the world. So while "om" is a common and meaningful choice for many people, you can choose a mantra that is calming for you, such as "peace," "love" or "joy."
