Scientists Discover Key to Manipulating Fat--And The Stress Fat Connection Print E-mail
by Charles Stuart Platkin

I just saw this, and thought..hmm. Just what we need more cosmetic surgery ....but this is very interesting. Also read below about the stress fat connection. Investigators at Georgetown University Medical Center have been able to use simple, non-toxic chemical injections to add and remove fat in targeted areas on the bodies of laboratory animals. They say the discovery, published online in Nature Medicine on July 1, could revolutionize human cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and treatment of diseases associated with human obesity.

Investigators say these findings may also, over the long-term, lead to better control of metabolic syndrome, which is a collection of risk factors that increase a patient’s chances of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Sixty million Americans were estimated to be affected by metabolic syndrome in 2000, according to a study funded by the Centers for Disease Control in 2004.

In the paper, the Georgetown researchers describe a mechanism they found by which stress activates weight gain in mice, and they say this pathway − which they were able to manipulate − may explain why people who are chronically stressed gain more weight than they should based on the calories they consume.

A View Of The Future From The Breakfast Table Print E-mail

A few weeks ago I was staying at an inn that was near the Appalachian trail in Pennsylvania. About a dozen of us did 4-5 hour day hikes along the trail, returning to the inn for meals and sleep. The inn was also a golf resort and hosted large groups of avid golfers, mostly men, who spent the day playing 18 hours of golf. We all ate an early breakfast choosing from a large variety of foods on the  buffet tables. An observer of the food choices of the golfing and hiking groups ( me) could have told the two groups apart even if one was not wearing golf shirts and the other hiking boots. The hikers all gathered around the oatmeal, high fiber cereals, low fat yogurt and fruit side of the table. The golfers were packed together around the warming trays filled with scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, sausage, hash brown potatoes, and butter drenched waffles.  I overheard one golfer say to another “You know, bacon is nature’s perfect food” as he helped himself to several strips.

There is a wealth of data that shows weight-training has a wide-range of positive effects on distance running performance, with Running Economy at the top of the list of running-related improvements.  But before I get into the nuts and bolts of a weight-training program for distance runners, I need you to be able to wrap your minds around the concept of Running Economy, and that it can be improved as a result of neural and muscular adaptations.

The G.I. Diet Author Only Pretends To Be Low-Carb Print E-mail

Basing a diet on the glycemic index sounds good, but is it?

It's interesting to see how many diet books have come out in recent years taking portions of the wildly popular Atkins diet and tried to transform them into nicely packaged "new" diets. Sadly, most of these so-called diets greatly miss the mark of the masterpiece of the original.

Such is the case with Rick Gallop and his series of books on The G.I.Diet. It's an interesting concept that Gallop has capitalized on selling millions of his little books. But is the information he provides useful to people who are livin' la vida low-carb? Let's examine his latest book to find out.

Room Service in Jail Print E-mail

It’s not exactly eggs benedict at the Waldorf or anything, but Paris racked up quite a food bill at the prison canteen during her three-week stay. Even though she complained to Larry King about eating bologna for lunch and “jail slop” for dinner, she dropped $145.32 on jail snacks during her stay, according to a document at tmz.com. That would barely cover lunch for two at the Ivy, but it goes a loooong way in Lynwood , apparently.
