What You Don't Know is Making You Fat (part 2) Print E-mail

The following are excerpts from Mary Dimino and Doctor Brad Johsnon's new book, "Scared Skinny":

Studies at the University of Minnesota compared a fructose diet (17% of total calories from fructose, typical "fast food diet") to a diet sweetened mainly with sucrose. The results were dramatic. The fructose diet produced significantly higher levels of triglycerides in the blood, in men about 32% higher, than the sucrose-sweetened diet. The fructose diets also made triglyceride levels peak faster, just after mealtime, when such fats can do most damage to artery walls.

Face it, as a nation we are getting fatter. There is no mistake about it.  The question is why are we getting fatter?  The typically weight-biased person would say it is due to laziness, a lack of caring about health or personal appearance, a choice you have made to be fat.  If you really cared, you would get your butt off the couch, put down the Twinkie, and get to the gym.  Hold on now; let's think about this for a bit. If this was purely the case and these stereotypes are true, then how is it that 66% of Americans are now obese? Could 66% of our country be lazy, unmotivated, and just don't care?  The answer is a resounding no. Did you know that cultural factors cause people to become fat, too? In fact, a report released by the Institute of Medicine suggests just that.

Yes, I've talked myself into it.  I am going to accept myself today.  Great intention, but why, why is it so hard?!  Why is it so very hard for us humans to accept ourselves?  Can one truly embrace oneself, flaws and all, without cringing.  Without wanting to run to the store to buy the latest diet pill, race to confession for absolution, or just suffer quietly in the agony of your own imperfection.

I have a friend, who, in my eyes is nearly perfect.  She is a tall, tanned, blond, blue-eyed beach babe with a figure to die for.  Perfect 36-24-36.  When I work out on the spin bike, sweat stinging my eyes, I imagine myself as her.  She is my goal body.  Yes, I put my face on her body.  I pretend I am walking barefoot, like she does, on the Jersey shore, strolling past the boardwalk, jeweled fit flops dangling from my nicely manicured hand, wearing sparkling white shorts and matching top.
