My life was radically changed forever on January 1, 2004. That's the day that marks the first day in a journey I now refer to as livin' la vida low-carb.
As a 410-pound morbidly obese man with breathing problems, blood pressure skyrocketing, cholesterol through the roof and other obesity-related health conditions that were leading me to a one-way ticket to an early grave, I decided enough was enough.
I got on the Atkins diet after reading "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" book and even started exercising for the first time in my life. Although it was a difficult struggle at times throughout the process of losing weight, I was able to lose nearly 200 pounds that year and I've kept it off ever since with low-carb living.
My life has been radically transformed and it's all because of the healthy low-carb way of eating. I created a blog (http://livinlavidalocarb.blogspot.com) in April 2005 called "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb" to help encourage and educate others about this miraculous health and weight loss program and I even wrote a book called "Livin' La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year" to share my story of hope with others.
It is my mission in life to help anyone who is overweight or obese to begin dealing with their weight problem and to rise triumphantly over it just like I did. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime at livinlowcarbman@charter.net if you need a word of encouragement, some useful advice from someone who has been there, or just a listening ear. I'm here to help you.

Xavier seeks help about what to eat to help him lose weight
When you have a blog about diet, weight loss, fitness and health that is as visible as mine, it is inevitable that there will be people who stumble upon it in their Internet search for something else. It happens all the time and I'm grateful for the chance to educate, encourage, and inspire everyone who visits here once or thousands of times.
With so many new faces coming here daily, I'm always intrigued about how they got here. Recently, a good many first-time visitors discovered one or more of my posts about Manuel Uribe, the former 1200-pound man from Monterrey, Mexico who has lost over 400 pounds so far by livin' la vida low-carb. It's an amazing story that I have stayed on top of for the past couple of years and people are rooting Manuel on to great success. |

I've become convinced that one of the greatest assets that those of us who believe in the power of livin' la vida low-carb possess is the ever-growing litany of respectable published research that continues to pour in at breakneck speed. A young researcher from the University of Pennsylvania recently confirmed that there is "strong interest" in low-carb diets and how they relate to treating obesity and disease. This has me very excited about the future of the low-carb lifestyle because we're just getting started.
Now that the new year is here, there will be even more positive studies regarding livin' la vida low-carb to be released. All this encouraging research shows us there's no debate about the fate of low-carb in 2008. Things are looking up--WAY UP!--and we should be holding our heads high as the science finally begins catching up with the experiences those of us who have been eating this way already know.

I don't know about you, but ever since I started livin' la vida low-carb I've had such an unprecedented hunger and thirst for information about nutrition, fitness, diet and health like never before in my life with any other subject. Even when I was studying government and politics in college and graduate school, I never felt THIS excited about reading so many books and resources. It's an educational awakening that I think most low-carbers go through because of the enlightenment we see happening to our own weight and health.
To that end, I'm always happy to share with you some of the most current and not-so-current books I have come across and read while studying this fascinating subject. But, as will often be the case, the books do tend to pile up on me a bit, so today I'm gonna highlight 15 new and essential books about diet and health that I've been reading lately along with a few comments about each one. |

Last week I was interviewed by my local newspaper here in South Carolina--Spartanburg Herald-Journal--for an upcoming feature story about how I've turned my weight loss success into a business and an interesting topic of conversation came up that coincides with a blog post I've been working on for a while. I told the freelance writer who was interviewing me last Friday that we were just on our way out the door to go to lunch at Denny's and she said, "Well, you can't eat anything healthy there, can you?"
Opportunities to educate never end. :) |

Nina Planck says it's time to get back to real, whole foods again
1. What a real treat we have at “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” today as the author of the book Real Food: What To Eat And Why is here with us. She’s food enthusiast Nina Planck and she has quite a perspective as it relates to advocating people start eating more “real food” in their diet while shunning the processed garbage that unfortunately has become all-too-common in the modern diet.
Welcome Nina and I appreciate you spending a few moments with me and my readers. You grew up around fresh produce and quickly fell in love with farmer’s markets. How did that experience shape you into the enthusiastic lover of “real food” today? And what is “real food” as opposed to “fake food?” |
