Hello. My name is Charles Stuart Platkin, I’m the founder of DietDetective.com, I have a syndicated column that’s in more than 165 daily papers, I’ve also written 5 books on health and behavior. As far as academic background: I received my undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Juris Doctorate from Fordham University, and a Masters in Public Health from Florida International University. I’m also a certified personal trainer and I’m currently completing my Ph.D. in Public Health. Ok. A few points, just so we’re clear. This blog will NOT be investigative stories, or well written, heavily edited articles. It will be from my mind, to keyboard, to computer. There WILL be typos, grammatical errors, and run on sentences. But that’s fine, because you’ll get the point.

Jenny Craig has done it again. They seem to be picking right with their celebrity clients. I'm sure everyone is excited to see Queen Latifah lose the weight. She really is a lovely person (or appears to be), and it will be interesting to see her get in shape. But keep in mind, that these celebs are paid big $$$$ to lose the weight. I'm sure that most of you could lose weight if that became your full time job. According to the company, Queen Latifah will star in Jenny Craig's new advertising campaign that will begin January 21, 2008. Latifah, who has consistently celebrated her plus-size figure over the years, will lead a very different campaign for the weight loss category - concentrating on a healthy lifestyle rather than getting into a specific dress size.

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have found new clues to why some people overeat and gain weight while others don't. Examining how the human brain responds to "satiety" messages delivered when the stomach is in various stages of fullness, the scientists have identified brain circuits that motivate the desire to overeat. Treatments that target these circuits may prove useful in controlling chronic overeating, according to the authors. |

The February issue of Consumer Reports takes a hard look at exercise machines sold through infomercials on TV and the Web. CR tested 10 exercise devices costing $50 to $300 and found that most product claims to chisel, tone, target, and lift were overblown, and that the same or better results could usually be achieved through simple exercises requiring little or no equipment. |

Adolescents who participate in physical education at school are more likely to maintain a normal weight as young adults, according to a study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. For each weekday of physical education at school the odds of being an overweight adult decreased by 5 percent. Participation in all five days of physical education decreased the odds of being an overweight adult by 28 percent. |
