I just read in the paper about a woman who lost 100 pounds by simply cutting out a few things from what she ordinarily ate, instead of following one of the latest and greatest diets.

Low-carb stores are opening up around the country, restaurants are offering low-carb foods, and everyone seems to be low-carb crazed. It feels like food déjà vu -- didn't we already go through this with the "low-fat" craze in the early 90s?

You can't control the portion sizes at your local restaurant, or the fact that it's difficult to understand the food label or that manufacturers put excessive amounts of sugar, fat or both in the foods you love. It's hot -- you pull into a Starbucks for a Frappuccino -- nothing wrong with that, right? After all, it's only a cup of coffee. Well, believe it or not, that drink that cools you down may be the caloric equivalent of a Big Mac if you're not careful.
